Dog Training Basics

Training your dog is extremely important. It the best way to be sure that your dog understands who is the boss. Dog training is also the best way to make sure the lines of communication are always open between you and your pet.
There are many ways to train your dog, and there are also training techniques for any problem you may be facing with your dog. Some work better for certain people than others, so you should educate yourself on various methods before you try any of them out.

Puppy Training Classes
Dog training should start early so that your dog has as much time as possible to learn what it needs to. Many pet stores offer classes for training your puppy, and you can usually find small businesses that offer this as well.

There are different levels of classes, so you can start with the basics such as “sit” and “stay” before moving up to more complicated commands. Do keep in mind that you can get this dog training for canines that are already adults as well. So if you didn’t start when they were puppies, you can still get them the training they need.

Clicker Training
Using a “clicker” works very well for some people and their dogs. The basic idea is that you use a small metal object called a clicker to let your dog know when they do something right.

When they do something right, you click it right away, then give them a treat. This can help to freeze-frame the moment in their mind and help them to realize exactly what it is that you want from them. They will associate the clicking sound with a treat, and will realize that the action that caused the click is the one they are being rewarded for. If you stick with this method it can be very effective.

Don’t Be Violent
Being aggressive is probably the worst dog training method there is. Yelling at your dog and hitting them generally only confuses them, and will breed mistrust. You should use a stern voice when reprimanding them, but this is just as effective as yelling, so there is no need to raise your voice. Also, finding proper forms of punishment is better than hitting or confining them to their crate.

Do Some Research
Getting books on dog training is a great idea. Read everything you can on the methods that you would like to try, and then start working on them. Buying your resources is good because then you always have them to refer back to if you are confused on something.
Keep in mind that there is generally no “magic” tip or trick that you can use to fix a behavioral problem in your dog. Dog training is something that takes time, and you need to stick with it. If you use one method for a couple weeks and there are no signs of improvement, try another method for a couple weeks. You may feel frustrated, but you will figure out a solution. Once the issue has been resolved, both you and your dog will be happier for it.
