So you want a bird cage but you’re on a budget. The answer of course is to find a cheap bird cage. In this usage, cheap should not be confused with shoddily made. It’s a simple matter to get an inexpensive bird cage, but it’s another thing still to get one that won’t cause problems for your bird.
A cheap bird cage is a fine goal, but you have to make sure that in going for the best deal you are not potentially killing your bird. The first thing to note about any bird cage is the construction material. Cheap cages may be made of wrought iron or other metal. Unless a bird cage is made of stainless steel, there is a chance that your bird could get heavy metal poisoning from chewing on the bars of its cage. To prevent this all that is required is a thin coating over the surface of the metal. Most cages will have this but it is important to ensure that the one you purchase does too.
Another thing to look for when shopping for cheap bird cages is door and latch quality. Birds are extremely clever and if you get a door latch that your bird can figure out and manipulate, you will be rewarded with a house that is a mess some day. Dual action latches are the safest; since birds do not have thumbs it is difficult (though not impossible!) for them to operate these catches.
