Dog House

Part of the responsibility of owning a dog is to be sure it receives the proper care. If your dog is going to be outside for any long period of time, a dog house is essential to provide comfort and protection in any weather. In addition, a good house will help extend and improve the quality of life for outdoor dogs.

When building or purchasing a dog house, consider the breed of dog that will be residing in it. If you have warm or hot weather dog breed and you live in a cooler climate, you’ll want to be sure the house has adequate insulation to keep your dog warm enough through the cold months. Cold weather breeds may not need the extra insulation considering they are genetically intended to tolerate cold temperatures. The house should be a comfortable living space for your dog in both the extreme cold, and hot weather.

There is a selection of dog house designs to choose from. A basic design is a simple structure containing one small area for your dog to rest and escape extreme weather elements. More complex designs, such as dog “mansions”, have larger living space with the freedom of an outdoor porch. No matter what design you choose, any dog shelter should be well built, durable and structurally sound. Additionally, a raised floor will keep your dog cool in the summer, warm in the winter and dry in wet conditions. Custom door flaps will supply even more wind and weather resistance, especially in harsh weather conditions.

The size of the dog house is also an essential part of choosing the proper home for your dog. If the house is too small, it will be uncomfortable and your dog won’t want to use it. If the house is too large, it will be harder for your dog to retain body heat in order to stay comfy and warm. Also, dogs feel more secure in a snug-fitting area. As a general rule, the house should be large enough to allow the dog to stand up, turn around and lie down comfortably inside the house.

Materials used to build a dog house should be durable and weather defiant to ensure functionality as well as style and beauty. Wood should be water resistant and strong. If possible, choose materials that are resistant to decay and insects. Slant rooftop designs help to allow rain and melting snow roll right off preventing the inside of the house from getting wet. If you prefer more protection, you may want to use a waterproof shingle roof.
Some roof tops are designed to lift up allowing easy access to your dog and simplify cleaning. Adjustable waterproof feet are also available to keep the floor safely off the wet, cold ground.

We all need our own personal space, and dogs are no different. In the wild, dogs are able to seek out shelter when they need it, however, in a domestic environment dogs are confined to a limited space and don’t have that option which is why it is up to us to make a shelter available. Providing your dog with a safe, secure and restful area to reside promises a happy, healthy dog. As well, it offers the freedom to enjoy a little bit of independence.
