When the words “litter box” are uttered, dog is not the next word to come to mind. But believe it or not dog litter boxes do exist! Used mostly for small dogs, litter boxes can be an effective way to keep your dog from asking to be let out frequently while keeping your house free of accidents.
Dog litter box training is fairly straightforward. You buy a litter box, fill it with your material of choice (whether it be newspaper, absorbent pad, or doggy litter), and begin teaching your dog to use that location as a bathroom. The simplest way to do this is to leave your dog no option but to run to its crate when it is going to use the bathroom. Then, if you see it going you can “scare” the dog and it will run to the bathroom to urinate.
Keeping a dog litter box can be more difficult at first than keeping one for a cat. Dogs are not naturally predisposed to use a litter box as a bathroom. But if you work on training your animal, the effort will pay off in a dog that no longer needs to be let out to use the bathroom.
