Many dog owners worst nightmare is that their pet will get lost. Thankfully, there are things you can do to help alleviate some of the stress that this thought can cause. Dog tags are the most common method of protecting a dog against getting lost. It is an effective method, because it gives people someone to call if they find your dog. They also help because people are more likely to approach a dog that has a collar and tags.
So, you know that you definitely want some dog tags for your furry buddy. Anything you can do to keep anything happening to them is great. So now you have to pick what kind of tag you’re going to get. While the primary function of a dog tag is to make sure your dog gets home safely, it can also be very stylish and showcase your dog’s personality.
There are countless dog tag designs you can get. There are dog tags for tiny dogs and huge dogs, so you can coordinate the size of the tag to your dog. This is important because you don’t want a tag for a Great Dane on your Toy Yorkie. So the first thing is to make sure the tag’s size is right. But this is probably the easiest step in the whole process.
There are tons of shapes for dog tags on the market. Common shapes include circles, ovals, hearts, flowers, and dog bones. Some tag shapes are not seen as often as these, including little hydrant shapes, puppy faces, and diamond shapes. There would probably be even more, but the tag has to be a logical shape for putting information onto it.
The next thing to decide is what kind of material you want your dog’s ID tags to be made of. Metal is probably the most popular option due to its durability and versatility. Metal tags have also been around the longest because they are easy to make. But plastic has made a big entrance into the field of dog tags. Plastic is now almost as durable as metal, and can be formed into just as many shapes. One thing that makes plastic stand out above metal is how quiet it is. Many people are irritated by metal tags clinking together, and plastic makes much less noise.
No matter what material you choose, you’ll probably be able to find whatever color you want. You can easily coordinate the color of the dog tags to your dog’s collar and leash. You can even get tie-dye or American flag tags if you’d like.
While all this is fun, you do need to keep in mind that a tag does nothing if it doesn’t have your personal information on it. You can decide what you want on the tag, and this may affect the size of tag you get. Some people just put the dog’s name and a phone number on the dog tags, and leave it at that. Others put their full home address or their vet’s address on the tag as well.
You’ll rest easier if your canine friend has its own dog tags. While nothing can completely alleviate the fear that they might someday get lost, tags will go a long way in keeping that from happening. On top of that, your dog can run around in style with a personalized tag.
