An electric litter box frees you from the chore of litter box scooping and leaves your litter area free of odors. These litter boxes use sensors to identify when your cat has made a mess. About ten minutes after your cat leaves the box, an electric rake automatically scoops the used clump of litter into a compartment. Once the rake retracts, a lid covers the soiled litter in the compartment without any help from you. All you have to do is empty the tray when it gets full.
Unfortunately, there are some downsides to an electric litter box. If the litter is too damp and doesn’t clump properly the rake will get jammed rendering it fairly useless for later activations. Other disadvantages include the cost of the litter box and the constant use of batteries. Premium clumping litter is recommended and is typically more expensive than standard litter. This suggests it may not be the most cost effective solution.
Most importantly, even if an electric litter box will save you time and trouble, the question is will your cats appreciate it as well. Some cats have been known to be frightened by these automated litter boxes, as a result, the cats won’t go near them. On the other hand, if your cats use it and enjoy it you'll never have to scoop a dirty litter box by hand again.
