A reptile aquarium, more precisely called a habitat, is designed to hold a variety of lizards, amphibians or snakes. Although these habitats can be built using a fish aquarium, the term is a misnomer because they are not filled with water. Instead they usually contain sand, sticks and various sources of cover for the reptile.
A reptile aquarium is generally built from a transparent material such as glass, plastic or acrylic. Out of these three, acrylic is generally preferred due to its greater clarity, insulative properties and impact resistance. Glass and plastic enclosures are usually less expensive, however.
A reptile aquarium can be a very simple project. For most reptiles, the keys to success are an adequate heat source and places in which to hide. Many people, however, find that creating a realistic environment for the animal can be quite rewarding.
