Reptile Lights

There are a variety of bulbs available that are marketed as reptile lights. However, for the most part there is nothing that these bulbs do that a normal incandescent light bulb can’t achieve, and at a lower price. The main difference is that those marketed for reptiles are designed to eliminate yellow wavelengths, which has no real impact on the reptile itself.

Using an incandescent bulb along with a ultra-violet B producing florescent light is the most recommended method. UVB is produced naturally by the sun, and is required for the health of most reptile species. This combination also allows more ultra-violet A, which helps the vision of the animal.

As with most creatures, the sleep cycle of a reptile is affected by the light. For this reason it is recommended that nocturnal reptile lights are used at night. These lights are designed to provide the necessary heat while blocking the majority of the visible light.
